ON DON PEDRO
Sunday, March 11, 2001
Lake Don Pedro, CA
By: Tim Paes
Nor-Cal’s first
open team of 2001 took place under ideal weather conditions. After a week of
temperatures that reached the mid to high 60’s, the expectations of the 88
anglers that were competing in the event were very high. Don Pedro is known for
huge spring time limits and the anglers were anticipating the yearly migration
of bass to the shallows.
Although the large
Don Pedro Bass didn’t show themselves on this day, many of the teams reported
catching several limits of bass and there were many 3-4 lb. bass brought to the
scales. All totaled, there were 148 bass brought to the scales weighing 315 lbs.
Largest bass of the tournament weighed 5.20 lbs.
Carey Edwards, of
Atwater, CA and Larry Stanford, of Chowchilla, CA, took 1st place
with their 6 fish 18.02 lb. limit. Edwards and Stanford brought in a solid limit
of fish with all of them looking like they were poured out of a 3 lb. mold. The
team told the crowd that all of their fish came on 4” Pro Worms in 3-7 ft. of
water. For their great day on the water, Edwards and Stanford took home $1,770.
Second place went
to Troy Wells Sr. and Todd Wells, of Ceres, CA. The Wells’ brought in a 6 fish
limit that tipped the scales at 15.82 lbs. The team reported that they ripped 1
of their fish on a pointer minnow and their big fish came on a jig, while the
rest of their fish were caught with Kalin Grubs and homemade brown worms. The
pair went on to say that their fish were caught from the bank out to 35 feet.
For their finish the Wells’ took home $1,018.
Finishing 3rd
was Matt Terry and George Karabinnis, of Modesto, CA. Terry and Karabinnis
brought a 15.72 lb. 6 fish limit to the scales. The team caught their fish on
Keeper 082 red flake worms and ¼ ounce jigs in 5-10 ft. of water. The team took
home $672 for the day on the water.
Rounding out the
top 5 in 4th place was the team of John Azevedo, of Hilmar, CA and
Frank Corey Lewis, of Merced, CA. Azevedo and Lewis brought a 6 fish limit to
the scales that weighed 15.70 lbs. The team also took big fish for the event
with their 5.20 lb bass. Azevedo and Lewis earned $760. Fifth place went to Kyle
Rasmussen and Joe Menzies, of Angels Camp, CA, with their 6 fish limit that
tipped the scales at 14.60 lbs. The pair took home $250.
